Are we in a period of horrible news coverage?

I was looking at CNN.com just now, and I can't believe what I'm seeing. Here are some examples of the stories that they have on there:
"Look out! Driver crashes into bank."
"'Like I was on rollerblades,' says Miss USA."
Here are some examples of what's being featured on CNN Video:
"Volcano spews smoke, lava"
"Man Lives in Tiny House"
"360 Shot: Beauty Queens Fall"
Yes, CNN should have some weird stories on there and yes, it is impossible to constantly show serious news on its 24-hour news channel. But when is it enough? I would only like one, maybe two weird or funny stories or those I don't care about once, maybe twice an hour on the 24-hour news channel. But the news channel is becoming less of a news channel and more of an entertainment channel.
Glenn Beck, Nancy Grace and Showbiz Tonight each getting two to three hours a night?
What about Larry King interviewing celebrities now? He used to interview important or in-the-news people. Now, he's paying Paris Hilton $1 million for an interview! What has the media world come to?

I don't know enough about Glenn Beck to comment on him but I used to watch Nancy Grace and I actually believe she's pretty good I mean she tries to investigate horrible things that happened that the police try to figure out. As for Larry King, he does whatever he can to get viewers I'm sure the producers of his show have more say about the guests than he does and they only focus on the ratings.

I'm agreeing with you here Kai, I've seen Nancy Grace, especially when she was covering the Duke Lacrosse scandal (or lack thereof), and not only did I find her to be a despicable human being, but a terrible journalist. Larry King does not seem to know how to conduct an interview, and most of these reporters on TV ask very vague questions that have no substance to them whatsoever.

Kai, who's to say that public figures (Paris Hilton) isn't news? Obviously these people are doing something right because they have there own shows. I agree with Bianca that it's mostly up to the producers to pick out the guests.

I'm just saying that this country might be paying a little too much attention to stuff that doesn't matter as much as other topics. Yes, these stories deserve attention, but not the amount that they get. For those stories, just say some items that are interesting, but aren't important for a short five to ten minutes per hour (including sports), but then get back to the serious issues of the day. If the audience wants to know more of those headlines, then watch something like E! or ESPNNEWS or some other channel like that. When it intrudes on news channels like CNN, MSNBC or FOX, it's keeping those channels from doing what they're supposed to be doing (telling the news).
Now Bianca, I don't think Nancy Grace or Glenn Beck are pure evil. It just seems (to me) that more often than not that they're jerks. The main thing I have against Grace was the Duke lacrosse case (like Pete had mentioned). She kept saying from Day 1 that they're guilty. She kept bashing these players' reputations in an effort to say "I'm right and you're wrong." And the day the players were found innocent, Grace didn't host the show; a substitute did. It may be from realizing she was wrong, but it might not have been. It just makes me think. I think she is a strong woman, and she does make some good points. It just seems like she and Beck come across as people who are there to make themselves feel stronger by putting down everyone but themselves.
