Invasion of Privacy

One of last night's assigned articles, "Is it Appropriate for Reporters to 'Lurk' in Online Chatrooms?" really got me to think. I thought it was unethical to enter a place where people think they can anonymously post personal information, and then use their personal information to further one's career.

And it isn't just journalists; isn't it a bit unethical for schools or businesses to search prospective students or employees' Facebook pages?

After the discussion we had yesterday in class we understand that most of us have mixed feelings on the subject.

I don't think it's unethical because Facebook is a public networking site. You can change your privacy settings and avoid all of that anyway.

it is very unethical for schools and business to search prospective students/employees' facebooks. yes there are privacy settings but networking sites should not be factored into job candidates or even students. while students shouldn't be posting inappropriate pictures or writing things they don't want others to see, it still is a little discomforting knowing that people are being searched and what's on their facebook is taken into account.

Based on our class discussions, I think we've come to the agreement that it's a personal decision as to what you publish on websites. Although some may argue that it's unethical for other people to search through your page, you are still accountable for what's there. If there's anything that could be viewed as questionable or offensive, you might want to reevaluate your decision of having these things available to the public.

I think it's unethical but then again I don't think so because it's bad enough that even today we have watch and say certain things on the internet because of lack of privacy but then again you know that there is millions of people that have facebook so it's up to you to what you put on there and if you don't want no one to know don't put it on there. People today blame others for invading their privacy but yet they put it out there for everyone to see.
