Experiences This Week

This week we have experienced Google Glass and TV and radio journalism.

Google Glass is wearable technology in the form of glasses --  or some people like to say it is "Google on your face." Google Glass has raised a lot of questions about privacy, since there is no way of telling if someone wearing it is taking a picture or video.  Even though this is an issue to some, this technology can be very helpful to journalists, by allowing a journalist to go undercover and possibly be able to avoid injury in another country.

We also visited the radio station, WMUC, and the TV studio (for CNS-TV) on campus.  At the studio there were a lot of lessons learned about being on the air and having the mic and cameras on. At the radio station most of us were filled with joy when learning what the radio station at UMD does, and the opportunities students who work there get.

What was your favorite experience?

I would say after all we've done this week my favorite experience would have to be the news room because we had a hands on / interactive experience of what a news room is like on the daily. It was also very funny to see how some people behaved there as well. It was very fun trip and great advice was offered to us. Overall that my has been my experience.

My favorite experience from this week was participating in the CNS-TV station in the television building. I also enjoyed the radio building a lot but the fact that I was on camera is what had me most excited. I loved the challenge of quickly put in a situation to read a script you haven't pre read. Since this is the first time I did a broadcast since elementary school, I enjoyed being on camera even though I didn't have a big crowd facing me. I believe that my partner and I did a great job and I'm excited to get the DVD of the broadcast. I also enjoyed seeing how everything in the studio works including focusing the camera on people, switching between cameras, and what signals to give the broadcasters.

My favorite experiences last week were the tours for TV and radio. I enjoyed the TV portion because the whole group received hands on experience either with anchoring or using broadcasting cameras. We also learned what not to do on camera.

The radio tour was amazing because we all learned who had visited, what it's like to DJ and deliver news there and we were able to see how unique looking the radio station looks. If I decided to come to the University of Maryland, I would definitely be a part of the radio team.

All the experiences, including Google Glass, were beneficial and fun.

My favorite experiences were the tours of UMTV and WMUC. The TV portion greatly interested me, since I aspire to go into broadcast journalism and work as a producer.
I also ended up enjoying the radio station much more than I thought I would. I loved the atmosphere of station. What also really struck me about the tour was the sense of camaraderie in the radio community. I found it amazing that people from so many different backgrounds and majors came together with a common interest in radio. I believe this really shows how naturally drawn people are to media and news consumption.

Out of these experiences, my favorite was the tour of UMTV. I got to see how the TV station worked and even had a hands on experience with the cameras. It was funny to see how people reacted to being anchors on live TV.
