Welcome Young Scholars students! I'm looking forward to working with you in JOUR 150 this summer!
This blog will be used throughout your three weeks with me to start discussions about media coverage of events, changes in technology and practices in newsrooms, media hiring practices and ethical questions about publications' handling of news. The best posts will include some research and links to reported stories or primary documents. Remember to be thoughtful and tactful; this blog is open to the public for viewing.
Each of you must start at least one blog post; all of you must also comment on some of your classmates' posts. I'm hoping our class discussions and guest speakers will give you ideas for this.
To get you started, I'd like you to tell me in the comment area of this post where you typically go for news, what you like to read, listen to or watch for news, and how you get there. (For instance, do you read sports stories linked to friends' Facebook pages? Or do you religiously go to ESPN's home page several times a day to read about certain teams or sports?) Be specific!

I primarily read sports news. I have several apps on my phone that gather news on specific sports, teams, and players of my choosing, but the one I use the most is Team Stream by Bleacher Report. I would prefer to read about one of my favorite teams, but I would definitely still read about other teams. My parents also watch the news after dinner every night and most nights I’ll watch with them for an hour so I can put off doing homework for another hour. For actual news I usually follow links I see on social media. Since class this morning I’ve downloaded some digital news apps as well.
Hi guys!
I am not as religiously dedicated to sportscenter as many of the guys are at my school, but I do make it a point to watch it at least once a week. I also follow their twitter account and get updates throughout the day from the ESPN app. Focusing more on baseball, hockey, and currently, the World Cup, I tend to tune out headlines that don't relate to that. I also check the Yahoo homepage and scroll through the stories to see if something catches my attention. I mainly read sports articles, however I think its important to read current events stories from around the world too. Around dinner time every night and during breakfast each morning, my family and I watch the local newscast to get a sense of what happened as we slept and what the upcoming day is going to be like. Moreover, I listen to whatever news the radio is playing in the morning on my way to school.
There are multiple ways that I consume news. They stretch through various mediums such as television, radio, and internet. For television I use shows such as Sportscenter on ESPN, NFL Total Access on NFL Network, and NBA Game Time on NBA TV to get a lot of information on sports. With those shows you get all the information about every team, player, and coach with constant updates throughout the day. If it is big enough they even cross over to regular news that is not solely sports based. I get general news from television from shows like Fox 45 and WBAL 11 news. With those shows I get information that's happening right around me and the surrounding areas. For news that's state and world wide I use the Today Show which often has reports of things happening outside the country. For radio I use my local FM stations such as 93.9, 92.3, 95.9,96.3. In addition to traffic reports those news broadcasts tend to report a lot on celebrity news. My Comcast e-mail has a news feed list right on the home screen as soon as you get to the website before you have even logged in yet. Therefore I tend to learn much information of daily events every time I decide to check my e-mail. Finally, my dad sometimes tells me information that he's consumed from reading the newspaper. The most interesting sections seem to be about the high school sports section. I find information on successful athletes with great stories and I even read an article about a classmate of mine in high school who plays varsity football. So therefore I consume my information from an array of sources.
Hi! I typically go to E! News. I religiously read articles about social media/pop culture that are featured in People Magazine and on Eonline.com. I listen to news on the radio stations such as Z100 and through the word of mouth from my peers. I watch E! News on TV. I get all of my news via Twitter and social media apps on my cell phone.
Honestly, I’m not AS up-to-date with the news as I should be. Generally when I get news I receive it through twitter or through the CNN app. I primarily focus on pop culture and celebrity news (even though it is pretty shallow.) My parents are very dedicated to reading The Wall Street Journal and The Los Angeles Times every morning. On my very brief three-minute drive to school I generally try to listen to NPR so that I am informed on at least something happening in the world.
Usually, I watch the evening news on a local television channel like ABC News for example, and sometimes on CNN. If I ever read the news (which I rarely do) I would probably google a certain current event and click on a website like abcnews.go.com or cnn.com. There are also a couple of apps on my phone that display entertainment news and world news as soon as I unlock it. In addition, a lot of time I hear about certain news from friends or possibly in school. After that I would probably just go and watch the news on television later on in the evening.
Hello, everyone!
Usually I prefer to read about fashion and celebrities. By doing this I read the new issues of Teen Vogue,Seventeen Magazine, Vogue, Glamour , and In style Magazine. I also enjoy looking at other teen fashion bloggers who are listed on Teen Vogues website. In order to hear about the celebrities I am interested I watch E!news, 106&Park, and the Fashion police. Sometimes I listen to 93.9 F.M. in order to hear gossip as well. I also like watching the Today show every now and then as well. Mostly during the school year I would wacth News 4 in the morning.
I don't have a specific type of news that I read/listen religiously but rather I read whatever piques my interest. I'll go on my Washington Post news app, the Yahoo news page, and my Facebook feed to get news. I also read the Time magazine when we get it in the mail. Very occasionally, I will watch news programs such as 20/20 and 60 minutes with my parents. Whenever I'm in the car, I get news from radio stations such as 97.1, 101.9, and npr.
I receive the majority of my news from links on various social media networks, primarily twitter and Facebook. I get the initial information on the story from these social media outlets, and if they interest me or are highly prevalent pieces, I will go to more credible news sources to get more details. I also often check buzzfeed, which contains mostly human interest pieces. I listen to NPR on a regular basis, since it's the only station my mother will have on in her car, but I enjoy many of the political and social based programs as well. Like most people, I tend to gravitate towards human interest pieces and stories with dramatized headlines, however I have been making an attempt at reading a wider variety of stories.
Sometimes when I'm on Instagram someone will post about something that happened in the news and I would google it if it interests me. Most of the time I get my news from watching a news channel in the morning before I leave the house. Usually I watch ABC News in the morning but sometimes I watch Fox. Honestly, I usually don't watch the news, but I do start watching when they are covering the weather.
However, when I do read the news it almost always an article in the Washington Post.
The multiple ways I consume the news vary from twitter to NPR. In the mornings and sometimes throughout the day, my dad listens to NPR in the car which means I have no choice but to listen. This has not been a problem for me lately because I tend to find the topics and stories intriguing. On twitter I follow CNN. The account tweets headlines of CNN's most relevant news articles, and if I see one that catches my attention I read the article. I also rely on the people I follow on Tumblr to post about interesting news articles about cultural topics I'm intersted in.
Hello,
I do not normally follow many news stories on a daily basis, however, I do enjoy watching E! News. I like to follow big social media stories in my free time and discuss them with my friends. When I am in the car with my father, we frequently listen to the WTOP radio station, and that is where I get most of my news from. Occasionally, when I hear a story on the radio that particularly interests me, I will follow up on the story by reading about it on CNN. I sometimes also watch the WRC news in the morning when I am getting ready.
Hello! I usually catch up on news through looking at different posts on facebook that either my friends have liked or posts that just pop up on my news feed. Sometimes, I go to the library and check out the Times Magazine if I see intriguing cover stories. More often than not, I will simply hear popular news circulating throughout the school or throughout my circle of friends. Although I don't watch news on the TV on a daily basis, I will sometimes listen to the radio when my parents drive me to school.
I usually don't have time to watch the news but when I do, I watch abc hmm hmm 7 news on tv. I like to hear about the latest Crimes and scandals going on. Also I hear news in the car on my way to school because my mom likes to hear about it and the station is 103.5 WTOP. Additionally, I might casually pick up a magazine while I'm standing in line at the grocery store with my mom, and some of the magazines are US Weekly, People, etc.
Hey everyone,
Usually, for news I go to my news apps such as CNN, WUSA9, and Buzzfeed on my Iphone. Lately, I have been receiving my news via Twitter from followers and from those who I follow. Typically, when reading the news, I look at whatever is on the homepage or at a story that peaks my interest. Occasionally, I also look at sports, entertainment, and weather updates. When at home I watch various news channels with my family, if the TV is on, at around breakfast or dinner time.
Hey classmates !
Im more of a social media type of person being as though im extremely tech savvy. For my daily news and information i use all apps, including twitter, ESPN, science daily, and CNN. When i look for updates i typically like things revolving around sports, worldly news (such as what's currently going on in Pakastain), and new innovations that improve our environment. Since im usually on the go i receive updates constantly throughout the day so there is no specific time that i stop and check for updates (unless a big game is on lol).
Hey ! To get daily news I love to watch CNN or HLN news for the newest stories. I enjoy watching different criminal trials as well the perspectives of different anchors such as Nancy Grace and Dr. Drew. My mom is also a news fanatic and follows CNN and HLN on Facebook and I get the updates on the latest worldly news as well as sports ( of course football , go cowboys!) Since those pages are constantly updating for the most part I'm always up to the date to the latest news . Also in one of my AP classes we have to always do current events that had to do with the environment and how it's impacting our lives.
Hi. When I get around to reading the news I usually get my information from MSN.com. Another way that I receive information about current events, is through instagram. After I see it on an instagram post, I usually google it, to get more information. I read news that covers events that are happening around other parts of the world, such as the conflict between Palestine and Israel. I also look at celebrity news, political events, and special events that effect the Maryland area. I get all this information from the internet.
Hi! I'm not usually super updated on current events, but I usually listen to NPR in the car on the way to school. In my journalism class at school, we have "media time" where we read and share articles from the Washington Post, which I also flip through occasionally at home during breakfast. I prefer reading the Style section and the Metro section, but I do read the headlines in News sometimes. Other than that, I usually just follow links to articles that people post on Facebook or Twitter. I prefer to read more about entertainment and celebrities, most of which I find out through Twitter or on Buzzfeed, both of which I check often.
