Welcome 2017 Class! Where Do You Go for News?

I'm looking forward to working with you on your journalism skills this summer.

This blog will be used throughout your three weeks with me to start discussions about media coverage of events, media hiring practices and ethical questions about publications' handling of news. The best posts will include some research and links to reported stories or primary documents. Remember to be thoughtful and tactful; this blog is open to the public for viewing.

Each of you must start at least one blog post; all of you must also comment on some of your classmates' and my posts. I'm hoping our class discussions and guest speakers will give you ideas for this.

To get you started, I'd like you to tell me in the comment area of this post where you typically go for news, what you like to read, listen to or watch for news, and how you get there. (For instance, do you read sports or entertainment stories linked to friends' Facebook pages or to other social media sites? Or do you go to ESPN's or The Washington Post's home page to read about news, entertainment or sports?) Be specific!

For my news, I usually get connected through social media, such as Twitter, or YouTube, but sometimes through television as well. I usually am the most interested in sports news, mainly football and basketball.

I usually get my news from television shows such as CNN, and if I'm online I like to use Youtube. For news on sports I usually get it from Espn.

I have the Washington Post and New York Times apps on my phone, and I get notifications from a variety of sources as part of Apple News. I check the Vice youtube channel daily, and occasionally check their website. I receive The Economist news magazine weekly, which is a more international publication focused on politics, international relations, and economics. I also receive a daily email publication from Politico covering Congress and the White House. I rarely watch TV news- only when there is a huge even unfolding.

I get news notification off my phone so that's linked to the Washington Post, CNN, New York Times, USA Today, and CNBC. So I'll read that article and then go to the Washington Post website and look at the top stories or search for more information. I'll also google the topic multiple times a day/week to find new stories, which usually pops up under google news.

Usually, I get my news from the internet. On YouTube, I watch a guy named Phillip Defranco. Monday-Thursday he covers trending news in America and sometimes international issues. Also, to keep up on current events, I watch news stories on my computer. I feel like through the internet not only is local news obtainable but, international news is so much more easier to find. Keeping up on world issues is really important to me so, I try to stay on top of it.

I receive notifications about major events from my various news apps such as New York Times, Washington Post, and BBC News. Each evening I watch the YouTube channel "The Philip Defranco Show," while he often covers the major stories of the day, since he takes suggestions from viewers he goes into a great variety of stories. Some evenings I also visit the home pages of various news organizations to compare their views and discussions of different events. Then while reading if any reference is made to another event or person I will look into other articles in order to learn more.

I get 2 newspapers everyday in France (Le Monde and Liberation) and I also have various apps on my phone such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Guardian, Politico, the Huffington, USA Today, Vice, Slate and other french newspaper apps. I listen to the french public radio daily and watch what we call the "20h" which is a rundown of what happened this day. When I'm in America, I watch CNN and buy the paper. I follow a lot of journalists on twitter and some media platforms (same ones that are listed previously). We also get news channels at school such as BFMTV and LCI (24/7 news).

Most of the time, if I am being honest I do not look at the news every day. If there is an important or urgent matter that is happening in the world I find out through Twitter or Instagram posts and then search on Google what people were talking about, which leads me to a major news website. For example, when the terrorist attack that happened in Manchester, I went on to Instagram and scrolled through my feed which features celebrities and they were posting things like- "Pray for Manchester" or "Broken from the bottom of my heart". I soon searched up Manchester into Google and "Manchster Shooting at an Ariana Grande Concert" stories popped up which informed me about the terrible situation that was happening in Europe. In addition, I get big news stories from Snapchat Discover page and briefly look over CNNs page, and sometimes the live stories of the breaking news. I watch the news at night with my parents before I go to bed which features local and global news as well. I am interested in reading entertainment magazines such as People, Vogue, Seventeen, and Teen Vogue. Other times I like to watch E! News or Extra to hear about current stories about celebrities, and what is happening in the entertainment industry. The reason for reading and watching these magazines/shows is because, I like to stay on top of the latest fashion trends, celebrity gossip, and learning about their lives away from the spotlight.

Usually I receive my news from social media sites such as Instagram and Snapchat articles. I learn about different celebrity, political, and sports news. I do not enjoy reading newspapers or political magazines. But how I receive important news in politics is by watching television shows or by my parents informing me on current events. However, most of the time I watch sports channels like ESPN and NFL Network so I can stay up to date on different sports topics. I am a sports fanatic and love seeing what big trades occurred in the NBA offseason, who will be the first pick in the NFL draft, and who is projected to win the next Super Bowl. Hopefully, through this program I will learn to spend more time reading the newspaper or the magazine so I can become a better Journalist.

I don't watch a lot of news or read newspapers, but my mom works in D.C., so when i'm at her house she's always ranting to me about many issues she sees and hears about. She really hates Donald Trump, and she tells me almost everyday. She likes to talk about any news she hears about, and also alot of news and current events happening in china. All of my extended family is in China, so they are always telling my mom about what is happening, which my mom likes to vent to me. Usually it's about how corrupt the government is, and about poverty, but she usually gets pretty upset when she talks about these topics.
